The first dozen day…

Today I found a record dozen eggs in the palace.  It is definitely taking longer for them to hit their stride than I thought it would (ie. this is a learning process).  Even so, we should soon start averaging a dozen per day, which means the selling can commence!

Hi Sam, Congratulations on the egg production! How exciting to see the hens start laying. It’s a nice payoff for all the good care you give them. :)

Yes, it really does feel good. We’re now at over 4 dozen eggs per day…which I ought to put on the main blog, I guess…

By the way, your website (http://www.whitetailridgefarm.com/) is beautiful! And I’m so jealous of your cows! I’m on the verge of getting serious about getting a jersey for our family. Do you have any suggested reading?

A cow represents a definite commitment to a farming lifestyle, but is very worthwhile! I very much enjoy my cows and the routine I have with them, as well as all the lovely fresh milk they give us! :)

A great resource is Joann S Grohman’s “Keeping A Family Cow”. In addition to the book, there is a great web forum by the same name, frequented by family cow owners who are very willing to share their knowledge and advice.
