Well, a few days ago I would have said, "Yes, pigs are very smart....they'll make the connection." Now that I've tried putting them in the larger enclosure, the answer is, "Nope, they'll run right through it...." I have resolved the problem, and I'll try to give a full blogging account of it in the next couple days!

I think it was clever of you to train them. Do you think they'll recognize the wire when it's in a different shape and place?

I'm glad the pigs are doing well. You need some good news!

Tami,

We are actually making plans to do the opposite...we're going to dig a basin to catch the worst of it. It will have gently sloping sides that remain mowable, and usable by larger animals (miniature cows, perhaps:). The hope is that we'll keep a larger part of the ground available for normal use.

The pens are designed for moving in the same direction, one pen-length per day. It is actually quite a bit of work to do emergency moving of any kind...especially once the ground is soggy.

Regarding the dead birds: I leave them in the field for a couple nights, for the scavengers. They will do the bulk of the work, and then I load them up and take them over to the back corner, where they disappear within a couple more days.

Oh, Farmer Sam, I'm so sorry. This is HORRIBLE!!! So many horrible thoughts. What do you do with all the dead, wet birds? Mass grave?

What will you do now? How do you solve the flooding problem? It's like you need to make a hill that you can have on reserve for JUST when it rains. Use it no other time.

Anyway, I'm so sorry.

Sam,
Vern and I are so sorry for all the money, time, and hard effort put into raising those chickens. Just to have the rain take them away. Although the turkey buzzards seemed to enjoy them. I would have perferred to eat them. The life of a farmer is hard.
Just remember one thing. God works in mysterious ways. Maybe there was a reason.
We'll be waiting for the next batch.
